Geelong City Council
The City Of Greater Geelong Council is a local governing body that provides services and facilities to over 190,000 residents and 10,000 businesses a 1,250 square kilometre area. The council was established in 1993 as an amalgamation of the former municipalities of Bellarine, Corio, Geelong, Geelong West, Newtown and parts of South Barwon, Barrabool and Bannockburn.
In 2000 the electoral structure of the council was amended after public consultation in order to strengthen and enhance the community. The City is now subdivided into 12 wards, each with a corresponding councilor. Elections are held every three years by public vote, and from these councilors, the Mayor of Geelong (currently Bruce Harwood) is selected. The next general election for the City of Greater Geelong will be held in November 2008.
Council chambers are located at the Geelong Town Hall in central Geelong. Public meetings are held twice a month, with all Geelong residents welcome to participate.
