Major Redevelopments in Geelong

Under the direction of the G21 project, Geelong has in recent years undergone significant redevelopments and is expected to continue developing as one of Australia's strongest regional cities. The 12th largest city in Australia, Geelong now has 210,000 people in the City of Greater Geelong and approximately 260,000 in the immediate vicinity with a population growth rate higher than the national average.

Avalon Airport was upgraded in 2004 and now provides interstate travel from Geelong, and developments in roadways, most notably the Geelong Ring Road, which will take the Princes Highway around the city of Geelong from Corio to Waurn Ponds and is due for completion in 2009, are set to improve accessibility for residents as well as boosting economic opportunity.

In 2007 major projects such as the Westfield Bay City expansion and the addition of over 70 new specialty stores were completed. Deakin University established a $37 million Waterfront campus and the $23 million Medical school. The waterfront area has seen an expansive development and is quickly becoming a prestigious real estate location and recreational attraction.

The relocation of the Transport Accident Commission from Melbourne to Geelong in 2006 created 850 extra jobs and an annual economic benefit of over $59 million to the Geelong region.
