Building a Cottage

When you decide to build a cottage home, you are entering into a new and exciting lifestyle. There are however several considerations you need to mull over before committing to your design.

You can either buy an existing building and tear it down, which will allow you to capitalize on existing amenities and build upon the old plan, or you can purchase vacant land and start from scratch, which is the cheaper option but requires a little more innovative work.

If you do decide to build on a vacant lot, you then have a choice of a prefabricated cottage (which costs less and offers the benefit of a reliable design), a cottage plan offered by many building companies, or an entirely customized design (the most expensive option, but one that will ensure that everything is placed exactly as you want it).

When choosing your land, you should consider whether it has sufficient road access, if the shoreline is suitable for swimming, if it is serviced with utilities and what local zoning restrictions may exist.
