Arts and Culture in Geelong

Geelong is home to a vast array of cultural attractions and offers excellent recreational facilities. Some of the most popular recreational attractions include the new developments at Waterfront Geelong on Corio Bay, including the Steampacket Place Precinct and Bay Walk Bollards. Deakin University has also just established a Waterfront Campus, attracting thousands of students.

The arts play an important role in Geelong, with the Geelong Art Gallery housing magnificent collections of historical and contemporary art, and the Geelong Performing Arts Centre and Costa Concert Hall hosting many exciting events in music and theatre. Geelong also hosts festivals such as the Queenscliff Music Festival, Meredith Music Festival, the Offshore Festival and Poppykettle Festival.

Geelong maintains the largest number of listed heritage properties per capita in Australia. Some of these attractions include the stunning Botanic Gardens and he National Wool Museum. Also worth a visit are some of the most scenic wineries in the country, including those at Scotchmans Hill, Spray Farm, Kilgour Estate and Idyll Vineyard.

Geelong gained television fame in 1998 when it was used as the setting for the popular series SeaChange, filmed at Barwon Heads. Several other films have been shot in the town and its surrounding beaches, paying tribute to the region's spectacular natural beauty.
