Fitting Your House On Your Land
To avoid major complications in fitting your house to the block of land you should make sure the house design is appropriate for the shape and size of the block, leaving the right amount of breathing room around the building. A large house squeezed onto a tiny block will look and feel cramped. A tiny house sitting in the middle of a wide lot will seem lost and isolated.
When planning the position of your house within the boundaries of your lot, you should attempt to make the most of your immediate scenery. Consider all seasonal effects when positioning rooms, thinking of both winter and summer light, and protect the house from prevailing winds by a garage or a stable tree. Try to fit the house so that it has enough privacy from the street, neighbours and other buildings, without looking closed off.
Remember to leave space if you want to include a garage or carport. Try to think about the future. If you want the possibility of renovating or extending later on, it might be wise to leave room. Or, if you have or plan to have children or a large dog you may find it important to have enough backyard space.
