Tim and Lauren’s journey with Coastal Bin Hire is one of growth, passion, and environmental stewardship. What began as a humble one-truck operation 8 years ago has now evolved into a thriving business, employing five staff and partnering with 40 builders across the region.

Their commitment to responsible waste management is not only evident in the orderly operation of their site but also in their impressive recycling rates, with up to 90% of construction site waste being diverted from landfill.

Environmental Leadership in Waste Management

At the heart of Coastal Bin Hire’s success is their approved Transfer Waste Permit from the EPA, ensuring that all operations meet stringent environmental standards. With a strong focus on sustainability, the company has developed a comprehensive system of policies and procedures that govern the sorting and recycling of materials on-site.

Tim, a self-proclaimed perfectionist, runs a meticulous operation. Visitors to the Coastal Bin Hire site will see bins, rubbish, and recycling carefully organised into neat piles and individual skips, all ready to be transported for recycling. These materials are transformed into valuable products, including backfill, mulch, and even fertiliser used on farms.

Despite their orderly operation, waste management is no easy task. It involves hands-on sorting and separating of materials, and as Lauren puts it, “It’s dirty, gritty, and smelly work, but we’re proud of what we do here.”

The Recycling Process

The recycling process begins when rubbish is brought to the Coastal Bin Hire transfer station. Inside a large shed, workers manually sort through the materials, separating out what can be recycled. This labour-intensive step is crucial to their high recycling rates.

Here’s a breakdown of the materials recycled:

  • Bricks, tiles, and concrete: These are placed into skips and later crushed to be used as backfill around concrete slabs.
  • Steel: Separated and sent to a metal recycling facility, Coastal Bin Hire collects an impressive 3 tonnes of steel each week.
  • Timber: Recycled into mulch that is used for major road projects and in landscaping centres.
  • Plaster: Sent to Anglesea, where it’s crushed and used by farmers. The gypsum from recycled plaster is highly sought after in agriculture for its ability to improve soil quality and increase crop yields.
  • Dirt: Screened and repurposed as backfill on construction sites.

A Commitment to Quality

For Tim and Lauren, it’s not about being the biggest in the industry—it’s about doing the job right. Tim explains, “We don’t want to be the biggest, we just want to do it well.” This ethos of quality over quantity is what drives Coastal Bin Hire’s success and ensures that their recycling efforts not only meet but exceed industry standards.

In a world where waste management is becoming increasingly important, Coastal Bin Hire stands out as a leader in construction waste recycling, making a significant impact on both the local environment and the broader community.

At Hamlan, sustainability is one of our Hamlan Hallmarks—from building energy efficient homes to our construction practices. We believe in building homes that not only reflect the natural beauty of the coastal region but also reduce our environmental footprint. A key part of achieving this is partnering with trades and suppliers like Coastal Bin Hire. Tim and Lauren’s dedication to recycling aligns perfectly with our values. By ensuring that waste from our construction sites is responsibly sorted and repurposed, Coastal Bin Hire plays a vital role in helping us meet our sustainability goals.
