At Hamlan, sustainability isn’t just a buzzword, it’s something we build into every home.
From the materials we choose to the technology we use, our focus is on creating homes that are energy-efficient, comfortable year-round, and future-ready. And when it comes to energy performance, few things are as telling or as powerful as a blower door test.
What is a blower door test?
A blower door test is a diagnostic tool that measures how airtight a home is. By using a specialised fan mounted in an external door frame, the test creates a pressure difference that reveals where air is leaking in or out of the home. Think of it like a check-up for your home’s insulation and sealing. It helps identify sneaky drafts that can lead to heat loss in winter or unwanted heat gain in summer.
Meet Brodie Edge, our in-house energy assessor
We’re proud to have Brodie Edge, Hamlan’s internal energy assessor, as part of our team. Brodie is qualified to carry out blower door tests and works closely with our construction and design teams to make sure Hamlan homes deliver the energy performance we promise.
“A blower door test gives us real data,” says Brodie. “It’s not just a rating on paper, it’s proof that your home is sealed properly and performing the way it should.”
Having this capability in-house makes Hamlan one of the only builders in the region able to perform blower door tests ourselves. That means better control, faster feedback, and better outcomes for our clients.

Going beyond 7 stars
All Hamlan homes are designed and built to meet a minimum 7-star energy rating under the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS). Our homes already include double-glazed windows, solar panels with a Tesla battery and a heat pump hot water system. But for clients who want to take it further, we offer an optional Sustainability Pack.
This upgrade includes:
- A heat recovery ventilation system to circulate fresh air efficiently
- An enhanced wall wrap to reduce air leakage
- Sealing of the bottom plate to the slab
- A blower door test, giving you measurable proof of your home’s airtightness and performance
Together, these features can significantly reduce your home’s energy use, improving comfort while lowering heating and cooling bills.
Why it matters
Better airtightness means fewer drafts, more consistent temperatures, and a healthier, more efficient home. Combined with smart design and sustainable materials, it’s just another way Hamlan is raising the bar for building in our region.
We believe sustainability should be practical, measurable, and built to last. Blower door testing is one of the tools helping us make that happen.
