What makes Hamlan 'Distinctively Local'?

  • Meet the Team

With so many volume builders on the market, it can be hard to find a builder that truly stands out from the pack. For Hamlan, the distinction is easy — we’re distinctively local. Hamlan has remained true to its roots since 1983 when it was established in Anglesea after the Ash Wednesday fires. During that time Hamlan identified a new approach to residential development for our region and filled a growing need for purposeful homes with architectural flair.

Thirty-seven years on Hamlan continues to build architecturally designed homes crafted for locals. It’s now Geelong’s largest locally owned and operated builder, employing a team of more than 50 local permanent staff in addition to local onsite subcontractors.

But being distinctively local is more than just being from the region. For Hamlan it’s being distinctive in design and taking inspiration from the local environment to create beautifully unique homes that reflect our clients’ aspirations. It’s being distinctively familiar with the region’s lifestyles, landscapes and suppliers. And it’s being distinctive in our ongoing commitment to the local community.

Let’s explore this further.

Distinctive in design

Clients choose Hamlan as their builder because they want a unique home that suits their specific needs and with a street appeal that they can be proud of.

With a local team Hamlan draws from an invaluable knowledge of the region’s lifestyle and landscapes, and pays close attention to elements such as traffic flow, maximising light and taking advantage of views when designing a home.

“We take inspiration from our local environment and design beautifully unique homes that reflect our clients’ aspirations,” Hamlan General Manager Andrew Carroll says.

The team believes a Hamlan home can be recognised from the street. Hamlan architects have developed a range of facades that have unique yet timeless looks. They’ve taken inspiration from our region’s differing landscapes from the cliffs along the Great Ocean Road to the luscious Otways to the beaches of the Surf Coast — to design facades with coastal materials and colour palettes in mind.

Hamlan’s goal is to build beautiful homes that are practical, functional and truly fit the landscape.

Distinctive in our local perspective

After 37 years of building homes in our region, Hamlan has gained a familiarity with the region’s people, trades and suppliers. This familiarity influences many aspects of the business from the construction of Hamlan’s homes through to its personalised customer experience.

Hamlan recognises the flow-on effects that supporting local has on the greater community. Hamlan has made it a priority to create long-lasting, respectful relationships with our local suppliers and subcontractors — some who have worked with Hamlan for 20 years.

This means Hamlan’s local team truly understands our region and its many advantages and challenges. This allows the team to design and skillfully build homes according to the lay of the land and the elements they may face — including wind, salt spray, bushfires and wildlife.

“Local craftsmanship is the foundation stone of our business,” Hamlan construction manager Cory Bauer says. “Our tradies and suppliers understand our high standards, reflected in the quality finish of every home we build.”

Over time Hamlan has also honed its customer service approach — allowing staff to really understand what a client is seeking to build — whether it’s a breathtaking cliff-top house or an urban knockdown rebuild.“Having local knowledge helps develop a genuine connection with every client,” says Cara Oliver, Hamlan’s business relationships consultant. “It’s a reflection of our commitment to customer service excellence.”

Hamlan operations manager Josh Liston says transparency, integrity and openness are at the centre of Hamlan’s ethos.

“Beautifully built homes reflect great communication with our clients,” he says.

Distinctive in our commitment to the community

Hamlan’s dedication to remaining distinctively local goes beyond day-to-day business, it extends further to strengthening the whole community. For Hamlan, that starts with strengthening the community’s future by supporting young local people. Hamlan has aligned itself with initiatives that help young people: Grow (a joint initiative between Give Where You Live Foundation and G21 — Geelong Region Alliance), G21, Northern Futures, Geelong Community Foundation and the Regional Industry Sector Employment program (RISE).

Hamlan General Manager Andrew Carroll sits on the steering committee of RISE as the Geelong Master Builders representative. RISE is a City of Greater Geelong program that responds to Geelong’s industry skills shortage by connecting people to skills and jobs. RISE won the 2019 Victorian Training Awards in the Industry Collaboration Award.

“I’m very passionate about getting the right people into our industry,” Andrew says. “Connecting those dots and getting those people to our subcontractors.”

Hamlan is also a member of the steering committee for Northern Futures, which provides pre-apprenticeships within the local construction industry to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to help break the cycle of unemployment.

Last year, Hamlan became a premier partner of the innovative local organisation Read the Play Inc. program, which addresses the health and wellbeing of young people.

Read the Play is delivered to under-16 football and under-15 netball clubs within the Geelong, Geelong and District, and Bellarine leagues. Its sessions focus on mental health and it supports participating clubs in caring for junior members through information, developing positive relationships and encouraging help-seeking.
