Why you should be building a courtyard home

Many people are seeking a home design that incorporates the outside in – and there’s no better way to do so than with a courtyard floorplan.

Courtyard floorplans not only look fantastic but have a number of practical benefits to create a comfortable, well-designed home.

In fact, courtyard homes have a very long history – traditionally this approach was used to protect occupants from the elements as well as provide a central location for gatherings. Fast forward to today and courtyard homes have evolved to suit modern life and continue to have a list of benefits.

Drawing in light and warmth

It can be hard to find that perfect block with a north-facing backyard, however no matter the orientation you can always try to make the best of a less-than-ideal situation with clever home design.

The great thing about a courtyard plan is that it works well with many different orientations. For example, if the front of your home is north facing, a courtyard floorplan can capture some of that sunlight over the top of the front roofline. It also works with blocks where north is to the left or right of the property.

A courtyard floorplan can also draw light into many different spaces, allowing you to enjoy the direct sunlight from multiple different areas of a home – not just your key living spaces. It also creates a home that is always light, bright and open.

A clever way to utilise a smaller block

A courtyard floorplan is also a great way to maximise a small block. More and more estates are releasing more compact blocks and as we all learnt from lockdowns – outdoor space is a necessity for new homes.

Instead of a traditional backyard, a courtyard still provides a garden area to enjoy that can also be used as an entertainment area. It also allows for you to enjoy the outlook of your courtyard oasis from multiple spaces throughout your home.

Protection from the elements

Traditionally, a courtyard home was designed to protect its inhabitants from the elements and keep them them safe.

With many areas across our region exposed to wind, a courtyard floorplan is a great option to use the physical structures of the home to create a protected outdoor area that can be enjoyed all year round – creating a seamless flow between indoors and outdoors. A courtyard is also great for those who seek an outdoor space that is private and secure for those more intimate gatherings.

Hamlan’s courtyard floorplans

Hamlan has a number of courtyard floorplans to suit a range of different lifestyles and different blocks.

Firstly, our Erskine 230 and Erskine 250 designs. The rear living and central courtyard of these designs gives flexibility for maximising the orientation of the home to multiple northerly orientations.

The Cumberland 206 and Cumberland 242 are two of our most popular courtyard designs. Featuring a much larger courtyard compared to our Erskine designs, this allows you to embrace a northerly aspect from either side of your block.

The Johanna 201, Johanna 257 and Johanna 274 are our newest courtyard designs. The three different designs vary greatly and allows you to enjoy your courtyard from one or two living spaces.

And finally our Gellibrand 287 – the largest of our courtyard designs. This floorplan is suitable for acreage blocks.
