Interior painting is by far the most popular do-it-yourself home improvement activity, and it’s easy to see why. There’s no better, more affordable way to freshen up rooms than with a new coat of paint.

To achieve the perfect base, follow these 6 easy steps:

  1. Determine the condition of your existing paint – remove any flaky paint by scraping or sanding it back.
  2. Clean the surface – wash away any chalky residue, dirt, dust, or mould from the surface with a cleaning product designed for paintwork and a clean cloth or sponge.  Give a final clean with water to remove any residues.
  3. Sand, sand and sand some more (ensure you dust off) – smoothing or remove existing paint from the surface is the most crucial step in preparing for a quality finish.  Make sure all dust is removed from the surface.  A good plaster finish is absolutely essential for the base of the paint system.
  4. Use a high-quality primer which will bond to the surface being painted and provide a suitable surface for the topcoat paint.  It is recommended that the primer coat be sanded prior to the first coat being applied, this will to improve the appearance of the topcoat system.
  5. Chose the right topcoat – Find a paint that will withstand the wear and tear of an everyday Australia family.   A high quality interior paint such as Haymes Expression Low Sheen will deliver a superior finish, providing excellent washability, no lingering fumes or offensive odours and comes with a 7-year anti mould and mildew guarantee is perfect for all rooms in your home.
  6. It is recommended that you use 2 coats of your chosen topcoat.  This will ensure a smoother surface and will deliver the optimal washability and mark resistance.  With a three-coat paint system it will be possible once the system is fully cured to clean marks using a soft cloth and mild detergent solution, this will give you the best results in washing your walls.
